Let’s be honest!
Traditional networking can feel… painful. I used to dread networking events.
Forced conversations, awkward introductions, and meaningless small talk about the weather? No, thanks.
But here’s what I’ve learned.
You don’t have to be the most outgoing person in the room to build powerful connections.
In fact, some of the best connectors I know are thoughtful, strategic, and intentional - without ever resorting to awkward small talk.
Today, we’re diving into how to network authentically (and effectively) without forcing yourself into uncomfortable conversations.
What’s in store:
Why traditional networking feels so awkward
A smarter, more meaningful way to connect

Why Traditional Networking Feels Awkward
Many people avoid networking because it often feels forced.
Here’s why:
❌ The pressure to be “interesting.” You feel like you have to entertain or impress people.
❌ Superficial conversations. “What do you do?” “Where are you from?” - and then the conversation dies.
❌ Unclear next steps. You exchange business cards, but nothing ever comes from it.
But real networking isn’t about collecting contacts. It’s about building relationships.
So, how do you make networking actually work for you?
1. Skip the Small Talk. Ask Meaningful Questions Instead
Instead of: “So, what do you do?” (yawn 😴)
Try:
✔ “What’s the most exciting project you’re working on right now?”
✔ “What inspired you to get into your industry?”
✔ “What’s a challenge you’re currently working through?”
These open-ended questions lead to deeper, more memorable conversations.
Pro Tip:
People love talking about themselves.
Be genuinely curious, and they’ll walk away remembering you as a great conversationalist.
2. Start With Questions That Set Up a Follow-Up
Great networking isn’t just about the first conversation.
It’s about creating opportunities for a follow-up.
Try asking questions like:
💡 “What’s one book you’d recommend reading on [Industry]?”
💡 “What could I do in the next week to level up my [Skill]?”
💡 “What’s the biggest challenge your team is facing right now?”
These questions serve two purposes:
1️. They spark a meaningful discussion in the moment.
2️. They create an easy, natural way to follow up later.
3. Plan For The Follow-Up
Asking great questions is just step one.
The real magic happens in step two: following up.
Here’s how you can turn those questions into an ongoing relationship:
➟ If they recommend a book, read it, then follow up with a thank-you and what you learned.
➟ If they give you skill advice, take action on it, then check in and share your progress.
➟ If they mention a challenge, brainstorm ways you could help, and reach out with ideas.
This approach makes networking feel genuine - because it is.
You’re not just collecting contacts. You’re creating valuable connections.
4. Be a Connector, Not Just a Collector
Most people approach networking thinking: “What can I get?”
The best networkers?
They ask: “How can I help?”
💡 If someone mentions a challenge, introduce them to someone who can help.
💡 If they share a goal, recommend a book, podcast, or resource.
💡 If you admire their work, send a thoughtful LinkedIn message to follow up.
When you focus on giving instead of getting, people want to stay connected with you.
5. Use One-on-One Conversations to Your Advantage
Not a fan of big networking events? No problem.
✔ Instead of trying to “work the room,” aim to have just one or two meaningful conversations.
✔ After an event, follow up with someone for a virtual coffee chat.
✔ Leverage LinkedIn by engaging with people’s content before reaching out.
Deep, intentional relationships always beat a stack of forgotten business cards.
6. Have a Go-To Introduction That Feels Natural
Ditch the robotic elevator pitch.
Instead, try this framework:
💬 “I help [who you help] do [the result you provide] by [how you do it].”
For example:
💡 “I help entrepreneurs scale their businesses sustainably by simplifying their marketing strategy.”
It’s short, clear, and starts a conversation.
7. Follow Up Like a Pro
Most networking efforts fail because people don’t follow up.
Here’s how to stand out:
➟ Send a message within 48 hours referencing something specific from your conversation.
➟ Share an article or resource related to their work.
➟ Keep in touch even when you don’t need something.
Consistency = stronger relationships.
🚀 Action Plan: How to Network (Without Small Talk)
✔ Skip the fluff. Ask real, interesting questions.
✔ Ask questions that set up a natural follow-up.
✔ Give before you ask. Be a resource, not a transaction.
✔ Go deep, not wide. Focus on meaningful connections.
✔ Follow up. Relationships grow with time, not a single conversation.
