The Upside of Self-Doubt
Self-doubt isn’t just uncomfortable.
It can be downright paralyzing.
It’s that nagging voice that whispers:
“You’re not good enough.”
“You don’t belong here.”
“What if you fail?”
But here’s the twist.
Self-doubt is often a sign you’re stepping outside your comfort zone - a precursor to growth, if you know how to handle it.
Let’s break down 7 mindset shifts to help you stop seeing self-doubt as a barrier and start seeing it as your greatest advantage.
1. See Failure as Feedback
Let’s face it: nobody likes to fail. But what if failure was just data instead of a dead-end?
I’ve learned to treat every mistake like an experiment. If things go wrong, that’s just a sign to adjust and improve. Failures don’t stop you, they propel you forward.
💡Reframe: Instead of thinking, "I failed, I'm a failure," say, "This is just part of the process; now I know what doesn’t work."
💡Example: "I didn't land the client, but now I understand what I can improve for the next pitch. This is just a stepping stone."
2. Ask better questions
Self-doubt loves to ask disempowering questions like, “What if I fail?”
💡Reframe: Instead of thinking, “What if I fail?” say, “What if this works? What’s the best that could happen?”
💡Example: "What if this project takes off and helps me build the exact career I’ve been working toward? Let’s focus on that outcome."
It’s a total game-changer. By shifting your focus to the positive, you start to see new opportunities and your fear shrinks.
3. Embrace the Power of "Yet"
So often we fall into the trap of thinking “I’m not good enough.” But what if you just added one simple word? “Yet.”
Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” say, “I can’t do this yet.” That small shift opens the door to endless possibilities and growth. Suddenly, you’re on the path to success, not stuck in a dead end.
💡Reframe: Instead of thinking, “I’m not good enough,” say, “I’m not good enough yet.”
💡Example: "I’m not where I want to be yet, but every day I’m getting closer. I’m on my way to success."
4. Celebrate Courage, Not Perfection
You don’t have to be perfect to take action. In fact, action despite your doubts is the definition of courage.
Start small—set a micro-goal that’s just 10% outside your comfort zone. It might be scary, but that’s exactly why it’s worth doing. I recently put my first info product up for sale on LinkedIn. It wasn’t perfect, but I celebrated the courage to take the step.
💡Reframe: Instead of thinking, "This isn’t perfect, I shouldn’t do it," say, “I’m doing this anyway because it takes courage to start.”
💡Example: "This isn’t perfect, but I’m putting myself out there. That’s the first step, and that’s something to be proud of."
5. Remember, Everyone Feels It
Even the most successful people doubt themselves.
(Yes, even Oprah has bad days.)
It does feel good to know that this process is lived by all human beings, just like you are.
💡Reframe: Instead of thinking, “I’m the only one struggling with self-doubt,” say, “Everyone experiences this. It’s part of the process, and I can get through it.”
💡Example: "It feels tough right now, but I know even the best have days like this. I’m going to push through, just like they did."
6. Separate Facts from Feelings
When self-doubt strikes, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by emotions.
But here's the game-changer: focus on the facts, not the feelings.
I keep a “wins” list to remind myself of what I’ve actually accomplished.
It’s hard to argue with solid facts.
💡Reframe: Instead of thinking, “I’m not good enough,” say, “What’s the real evidence here?”
💡Example: "I’m feeling unsure, but I’ve got 5 years of experience, a portfolio full of successful projects, and great client feedback. My track record proves my worth."
7. Celebrate Courage, Not Perfection
Ever caught yourself comparing your journey to someone else’s?
That’s where self-doubt thrives.
Here’s the truth:
There will always be someone better than you, so comparing yourself to others means you’re setting yourself up for failure.
But your real competition isn’t other people—it’s your past self.
Focus on being just 1% better than you were yesterday.
Celebrate your progress, and let others do their own thing.
💡 Reframe: Instead of thinking, “I’ll never be as successful as they are,” say, “I’m focused on competing with my past self. How can I get 1% better today?”
💡 Example: "I can’t control where others are in their journey, but I can improve on my own progress every day. I’m working to be better than I was yesterday."
