Imagine a world where you can effortlessly tackle small tasks, declutter your to-do list, and regain control of your day, all within two minutes or less.
"The only thing standing between you and your goal is the story you keep telling yourself as to why you can't achieve it." - Jordan Belfort
In this month's newsletter, I’m going to dive deep into the Two-Minute Rule, explaining what it is, why it's essential, and providing actionable tips and real-life examples to help you optimise your workflow.
Let's get started on your journey to reclaiming your time and enhancing productivity.
Section 1: Understanding the 2-Minute Rule
What is the Two-Minute Rule?
The 2-Minute Rule is a game-changer, introduced by productivity guru David Allen in his best-selling book, "Getting Things Done".
The principle is straightforward: If a task can be completed in two minutes or less, do it immediately instead of postponing it.
This rule is grounded in the science of small wins – completing even tiny tasks releases dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter, motivating us to keep going.
By adopting this rule, you'll prevent small tasks from accumulating and bogging down your day.
"Your ability to generate power is directly proportional to your ability to relax." - David Allen
Benefits of the 2-Minute Rule
Whether you're in the boardroom or the kitchen, the benefits of the 2-Minute Rule are universal.
🕑 Time-saving: Tackling small tasks immediately frees up more time for critical, high-impact work.
🗂️ Task management: It keeps your to-do list lean and focused on important tasks.
💡 Reduced stress: Eliminating minor tasks reduces mental clutter and stress.
"You don't have to be a genius or a visionary or even a college graduate to be successful. You just need a framework and a dream." - Michael Dell
Section 2: The Two-Minute Rule in Action: Real-Life Scenarios
Let's explore some common business and household scenarios where the Two-Minute Rule can work wonders:
Pay Business-Related Bills: Quickly scan and pay minor invoices or bills.
Daily Planning: Organise your daily schedule, setting priorities in under two minutes.
Email Responses: Reply to short emails or acknowledge receipt.
Expense Tracking: Record small expenses as soon as they occur.
Follow-Ups: Send brief follow-up messages to clients or partners.
Social Media Updates: Share quick status updates or engage with your audience.
Filing Documents: File or archive documents promptly.
Data Entry: Enter small amounts of data into spreadsheets or databases.
Quick Research: Perform brief online research for upcoming projects.
Small Household Chores: Take care of minor cleaning or organising tasks around the house. Examples include watering plants, folding clothes, taking out the rubbish, sorting through mail, and making your bed.
Put Away Items: Keep your home environment organised by promptly putting away items that are out of place.
Clean Up the Kitchen: After preparing a meal, clean up the kitchen immediately to maintain a clutter-free and pleasant space.
Pay Household Bills: Pay household bills online as soon as they arrive to avoid late fees.
Section 3: Practical Implementation
Now, let's put this rule into action:
Step 1: Review Your Tasks
Start your day by reviewing your tasks. Identify quick tasks that take two minutes or less.
"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." - Mark Twain
Step 2: Complete the Two-Minute Tasks
Do them immediately or schedule a dedicated time slot. Use a timer to stay on track.
"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." - Walt Disney
Step 3: Break Down Larger Tasks
For larger tasks, break them into smaller chunks. Think of it as the "Elephant Habit" – one bite at a time.
"Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out." - Robert Collier
Section 4: Overcoming Challenges
While the Two-Minute Rule is a game-changer, it's not without its challenges:
Discipline: Maintaining the discipline to follow the rule consistently can be tough. Use reminders and time blocks.
Task Assessment: Sometimes, it's challenging to determine if a task will take under two minutes. Use a timer or trust your instincts.
Prioritisation: Don't let small tasks distract you from more critical work. Use a time-blocking strategy to manage your day effectively.
Section 5: Measuring Your Success with the Two-Minute Rule
Assessing the impact of the Two-Minute Rule is crucial.
Here's how to measure your success:
Time Saved: Calculate the time you've saved by not postponing small tasks.
Task List Reduction: Track how your to-do list shrinks over time.
Stress Levels: Observe changes in your stress levels and overall peace of mind.
Project Progress: Evaluate how more time is available for significant projects.

📅LinkedIn Growth: My 365-day LinkedIn Challenge journey in Numbers
Months on LinkedIn: 8 months
Post impressions: 239,345 [last month] → 260,099 [this month]
Connections: 4,416 [last month] → 4,635 [this month]
Followers: 4,915 [last month] → 5,171 [this month]
What stands out to me from this data is:
➡️ Increase: My post impressions have risen by 20,754 from last month to this month. This shows a positive trend in the reach and engagement of my posts.
➡️ Increase: My connections have grown by 219 from last month to this month, showing steady network growth.
➡️ Increase: My follower count has increased by 256 from last month to this month. This suggests that more LinkedIn users are showing interest in my content and choosing to follow me.
I am grateful to continue providing quality content to my followers and connections, which is the most important aspect to me.
This month, I posted 2 to 3 times a week, with the exception of one week where I had to travel, and I only posted once that week.
I sent 207 connection requests and had an acceptance rate of roughly 80%, so I'm pleased to see an improvement in the number of requests I sent compared to last month. I am also delighted to see that my strategy for maximising accepted connection requests is working well. I have been keeping track of requests versus acceptances so that I can assess and evaluate my requests and optimise my time.
I've also been constantly rethinking and fine-tuning my strategy, and I'm starting to see the results. I never wanted LinkedIn to become another job for me, and I can see some progress without feeling overwhelmed. This is very satisfying.
Additionally, I'm glad that this month I've been able to focus more on other aspects of my business and onboarded some new long-term students.
Next month, I will continue focusing on the following key areas:
Attend to urgent and important tasks required by my business.
Send LinkedIn connection requests.
Manage my LinkedIn direct messages.
Comment on posts.
Post 2-3 times a week.
Overall, my LinkedIn performance is showing positive growth. My posts are reaching a larger audience, my network is expanding, and I'm gaining more followers. I will continue to engage with my audience to maintain and build upon this growth.
I genuinely hope these insights contribute to your personal growth and success. Thank you for reading and being a part of this community. That's all for today.
See you next month!
