Strength confused with dominance.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Real power works quietly.

The Leader Who Empowered Others -Then Walked Away

A true leader understands that true strength lies not in recognition, but in what you leave behind in others. I learned this from an ancient story in Surah Al-Kahf about Dhul-Qarnayn

He was a leader given strength, resources, and reach.
He traveled across lands and encountered two very different situations:

In one place, he found injustice and wrongdoing.

In another, he met vulnerable people who needed protection.

And each time, he had a choice:

Exploit or uplift.

He chose to uplift. Every single time.

When he found wrongdoing, he held people accountable, with justice, not vengeance.

When he met those in need, he didn’t offer charity alone.
He didn’t create dependency.
He didn’t brand the solution with his name.

He helped them build their own protection.
Their own strength.
Their own defense.

He empowered them to stand without him.

Then he moved on.

No monuments.
No legacy campaign.
No demand for recognition.

Just the work, done well.

7 Truths About Power Most Leaders Learn Too Late

Some leaders only learn these after they’ve damaged trust.
Some realise them when influence has already hardened them.
Some discover them when the spotlight is brighter than their character.

Here they are - before you grow yours:

1. Power is a test, not a status.
It’s not about what you can do.
It’s about what you choose to do.

It doesn’t build character.
It exposes it.

3. Authority without accountability is just ego in a suit.
The more power you hold, the more humility you need.

It doesn’t perform.

5. Platforms are neutral. Intention is not.
We can build spaces that inspire, or ones that inflate.

6. Real strength works quietly.
The strongest leaders don’t announce themselves.
They build others.

7. Our impact is measured by who we protect, not who we impress.
The real question isn’t “Did they see me?”

It’s “Did I see them?”

Legacy isn’t who applauds you.
It’s who grows because of you.

Here’s What I’ve Learned:

Leadership isn’t just about us rising. It’s about who we bring with us.

When we help our teens move from “I’m not a language person” to confidently earning top marks, we’re modeling what empowerment looks like.

The clarity we model matters.
The confidence we instill matters.
The strategy we share matters.

Because real power is about empowering others to stand without us, and knowing that that is the truest measure of our impact.

Before You Grow Your Influence:
A Leadership Audit

1. Audit Your Influence
   Where do you hold power - at work, online, at home? Are you uplifting or controlling?

2. Replace Spotlight With Service
   Before posting or speaking, ask: “Who does this help?”

3. Build, Don’t Brand Everything
   Empower others to grow without needing your constant presence.

4. Practice Invisible Leadership
   Do one meaningful act this week that no one will applaud.

5. Ask the Recalibration Question
   “Am I using my influence to uplift, or just to be seen?”

Sit with it.

Not as criticism.
As alignment.

🧠 Clear Thinking Is Your Greatest Asset

The Price of Living in the Noise

Every single day, we’re hit with up to 10,000 ads (Forbes, 2023).
Add to that the 121 emails most professionals receive daily (Statista, 2023), and the endless stream of pings and pop-ups.

It’s no surprise that around 70% of people say notifications cause them stress (American Psychological Association.)

And we don’t just scroll past this noise. We absorb it.
It clouds our decision-making.
It wears down our intuition.
It pulls us away from what we already know is true.

The noise isn’t random.
It’s designed to keep you reactive.
Because confusion sells.

Here’s what I’ve realized:

🛑 When You Can’t Think Straight, We…

• make choices we wouldn’t otherwise make.

• buy things we don’t need.

• believe narratives that don’t serve us.

• follow paths that were never ours to walk.

• start borrowing other people’s opinion,

• and slowly lose sight of our own.

❌ The Real Cost of Noise

The noise isn’t just annoying. It’s expensive.

The price accumulates quietly:

Wrong partnerships.
Misaligned goals.
Energy spent on things that don’t matter.
Years we can’t get back.

We commit before we’re ready.
We copy what everyone else is doing.
We measure success by standards we never chose.

It doesn’t happen overnight.
It happens in small moments.
One “yes” when we meant “not yet.”
One scroll when we needed silence.

Until we wake up one day wondering:
When did I stop recognizing my own life?

In the end the noise costs us our intuition.
Our direction. Our peace.

When We Protect our Clarity...

Protecting your mental space creates:
→ Better decisions and choices you can stand behind
→ Sharper instincts you can trust
→ Stronger boundaries
→ Freedom that actually feels like freedom
→ A quieter mind, even when the world is loud

In business, clear thinking separates leaders from followers.

1. Turn Off Non-Essential Notifications
   Silence isn’t a luxury. It’s a leadership skill.

2. Schedule White Space Weekly
   Even 30 minutes of unstructured thinking time resets your inner compass.

3. Pause Before You Say Yes
   Just because it’s urgent doesn’t mean it deserves your energy.

4. Reclaim Mornings for Yourself
   Start the day with your own thoughts, not someone else’s agenda.

5. Name What Matters Most Right Now
   If you don’t define it, distraction will decide for you.

• Where am I reacting instead of responding?

There are moments, especially as women, leaders, and mothers, when the noise falls away.

The inbox is quiet.
The days slow down.
And for a moment, the world feels distant.

It can be disorienting.
It’s tempting to fill the silence with distraction such as scrolling, striving, or self-doubt.
To keep pushing. To stay visible. To prove to even ourselves that we’re still in the game.

But what if solitude isn’t a setback?
What if it’s where inner leadership begins?

Over time, I’ve come to see solitude not as something to fear, but something sacred.
Sometimes, the space that feels empty is exactly where clarity begins.

Here are a few quiet truths I return to in those slower, more uncertain seasons:

3 Quiet Truths About Solitude

1. Distance creates space for transformation.

Not every path is meant to be continued.

I’ve seen this in language learning, and leadership.

Many women I coach come to me feeling “stuck.”

The same is true for many of the students I work with who arrive feeling lost in French.

What I often discover is that it’s not ability that’s missing. It’s clarity.

That type of clarity only comes when we step back, reassess, and remove buildup of blocks that haven’t been addressed. These blocks could be confusion, fear of speaking, or gaps in understanding.

Solitude, and the right kind of support, helps clear those blocks.
And from that clarity, progress begins.

2. Your truest voice speaks in silence.

When the world quiets, the soul can finally speak.

In those slower seasons, your inner voice might whisper:

“Come back to yourself.”
“Choose differently.”
“This is the pivot point.”

This stillness isn’t just rest.

This is often when we rediscover what truly matters, whether it’s a calling we’d buried under busyness or the quiet way we reconnect with our boundaries, our children, or our values.
Leadership doesn’t always roar. Sometimes, it whispers.

3. Isolation tests your foundation.

Solitude asks hard questions:

→ Can you sit with yourself without judgment?
→ Can you trust the process, even when no one’s watching?
→ Can you find peace without performance?

It’s not easy, especially in a culture that celebrates constant visibility.

And yes, being visible can create powerful opportunities.
It allows others to see you, hear you, connect with your work and your story.

But not every quiet moment is a sign to push harder.

Sometimes, it’s a moment to listen inward and to recalibrate.
It’s a moment to remind yourself that your worth isn’t dependent on output, applause, or being seen.

As we step into January - full of fresh calendars, new goals, and the quiet pressure to get it all right - there’s something we don’t often hear in the conversation around resolutions:

Sometimes, it’s not about doing more.

Sometimes, it’s about letting go.

Letting go of the illusion that we can control everything, in our work, in our homes, or in our children’s learning journeys.

Because here’s the truth many of us need to hear, especially at this time of year:

We cannot control every outcome, but we can choose how we respond.

It’s a subtle shift, but a powerful one.

Whether you’re leading a team or encouraging your high school teenager who’s quietly losing confidence in their studies, this mindset can bring more clarity and calm into 2026.

Here are 5 reminders I’m keeping close this year. Perhaps they’ll support you too.

1. Choose Presence Over Prediction

The start of a new year can stir up regret about what didn’t happen in the last, or anxiety about what lies ahead.

But real change only happens in the present.

This doesn’t mean ignoring lessons or refusing to plan.
It means gently bringing your attention back to what’s real right now.

The shift: Notice when your thoughts drift to what was or what might be. pause. Breathe. Gently return to what is.
Ask: What choice can I make in this moment?

Your power lives here.

2. Protect Your Energy With Boundaries (That Feel Good)

Saying yes to everything can feel generous, but it often leaves us scattered, overextended, and not fully present.

Boundaries aren’t about shutting people out.
They’re about making space to show up well, both for yourself and others.

The shift: Before you say yes, pause.
Ask: Does this align with where I want to direct my energy this week?
If not, it’s okay to say no with care and clarity.

Try this phrase: “I’d love to help, but I’m currently focused on a few priorities. Let’s reconnect later.”

It’s okay to have limits. You’re not a machine. You’re a human.

3. Change How You Speak to Yourself

Many of us hold ourselves to standards we’d never expect from anyone else. If your inner voice has been more of a critic than a coach lately, you’re not alone. But it can be retrained.

We all have moments where we second-guess ourselves or feel like we should be further ahead.
But here’s a gentle reminder: you’re doing your best with what you’ve got, and that’s worth honouring.

Try this reframe: “This is new for me. I’m learning as I go, and that’s okay.”

4. Acknowledge the Hard Without Adding Extra Weight

Difficult moments are part of growth. But suffering often comes from the story we attach to them.

“This is hard” is a fact.
“This is hard and I’m failing and I should’ve done better” is a story.

This week, try naming what’s hard, without judgment.
It creates space to respond with clarity, instead of spiraling in self-blame.

5. Interpret Events in Ways That Move You Forward

The meaning we assign to events is often more powerful than the event itself.

A hard conversation might feel like a rupture, or a step toward deeper trust.

Did something not go as planned?
That doesn’t mean you failed.
It might mean you learned something crucial for the next step.

The shift: When something unexpected happens, pause.

Ask yourself: “What else could this mean?
Is there a more empowering lens I can choose?”

This is not about ignoring reality (or toxic positivity), but rather choosing a more empowering lens through which to see it.

A gentle invitation for the year ahead

Letting go of control doesn’t mean we stop caring.

It simply means we stop trying to control the uncontrollable,
and bring our focus back to where it can make the most difference.

In our leadership.
In our parenting.
And in how we speak to ourselves.

However you’re starting the year, whether with intention or exhaustion, know that small shifts in focus can bring big change.

Wishing you clarity, calm, and moments of light as you begin your 2026.

Why the Critics Don’t Matter (And Who You Should Listen To Instead)

I think about this often, both in my own journey and in the lives of the people I work with.

Every expert was once uncertain at their craft.

Every success story begins with awkward first steps.

Whether you’re building something new in your career, stepping into more visible leadership, or supporting your high school teen through a challenging subject, the critics seem to appear out of nowhere.

But here’s what I’ve learned after years of teaching, building, and working with ambitious women leaders:

👉 The loudest voices often come from the least experienced.
👉 Their “feedback” is usually fear wrapped in concern.
👉 Their advice? Unqualified. Their impact? Unnecessary.

Real leaders?
They remember what it felt like to be at the beginning, and they cheer you on from experience, not from fear.

What Successful People Know That Critics Don’t

I’ve noticed something beautiful about truly successful people:

They never mock beginners.
Because they remember being one.

The well-established founder sees your first win and thinks, “I remember that feeling.”

The seasoned creator sees your early work and thinks, “Keep going.”

The experienced educator sees a student’s hesitant first attempts and thinks, “That’s exactly how growth begins.”

They don’t criticize your pace.
Because they know the only pace that matters is forward.

But the people on the sidelines?
The ones who’ve never started the business, posted the content, or risked looking foolish?

They have all the opinions.
And none of the scars.

The Arena vs. The Stands: What I’ve Learned from Two Worlds

In my work, I see this pattern play out in two distinct but surprisingly similar ways.

In teaching, I work with high school teens who are sometimes terrified of speaking up. They worry about making mistakes, about sounding foolish, about being judged by their peers.

The critics are often the ones who’ve never had the courage to try themselves.

But the students who push through, who show up, practice even when it feels uncomfortable, and embrace the messy middle are the ones who transform.
This is not because they’re naturally gifted, but because they stayed in the arena.

In leadership and business, I see women founders hesitant to share their voice. Worried about being “too much” or “not expert enough.”
Concerned about what others might think.

The critics?
Often people who’ve never built anything themselves.

But the women who push through, who share their ideas, and show up even when they’re not ready are the ones who create real impact.

What’s the pattern?
Growth doesn’t come from listening to critics in the stands.

It comes from learning from people who are already doing the work.

Three Ways to Navigate Criticism (In Leadership and In Life)

Here’s what helps when the noise gets loud:

1. Check the Source

Before you internalize any criticism, pause and ask yourself:

• Has this person done what you’re attempting?

• Are they in the arena or watching from the stands?

• Do they have experience or just opinions?

Sometimes the harshest judgment comes from those who’ve never taken the risk you’re taking.

2. Seek Wisdom from People Ahead of You

This is where real growth happens.

• Find mentors who’ve walked a similar path.

• Connect with communities of people doing the work.

• Listen to those who have the experience you’re building toward.

These people aren’t there to criticize.
They remember what it felt like to be where you are.
They’re there to encourage, guide, and remind you that what you’re experiencing is part of the process.

3. Let Your Actions Speak Louder

This is perhaps the most powerful response of all:

• Share your work, even when it’s not perfect

• Take the step, even when you feel unprepared

• Keep moving forward, even when others doubt

Because critics will always exist.
They’ll talk, judge, and project their own fears onto your courage.

But they’re not in the game. You are.

And that’s what matters.

There’s a French word I’ve been thinking about lately: Non.

In English, we soften it.
We apologise around it.
We dress it up with explanations.

But in French, non stands alone.
No explanation. No apology. Just… non.

And that got me thinking.

We often think the biggest changes in life come from big decisions.
But sometimes the most transformational word in your entire life is just two letters:

No.

A Quiet No Can Reshape Your Entire Life

Here’s a question that can quietly shift everything:

“If this were my last year on earth, would I still do this?”

When you answer that honestly, something shifts.

Suddenly:

• The inbox wasn’t quite so urgent.

• The meeting didn’t feel as essential.

• The argument felt less worth the energy.

We fill our days with “just for now” decisions,
but those temporary compromises have a funny way of becoming permanent.
Before we know it, they shape our weeks… and then our years.

And one day, you wake up living a life shaped by things you didn’t even want to choose.

But guess what?

You’re allowed to choose again.

A Reminder for Women Who Lead - at Work and at Home

If you’re a woman running a business, leading a team, or parenting a high school teen who’s navigating exams and self-doubt, you’re already holding so much.

Maybe you’re also navigating your own visibility journey, finding your voice in a world that often asks you to quiet it.

And through it all, maybe you’ve been putting some of your own needs on pause.
It’s understandable. So many of us do.

But I want to gently remind you:

You’re allowed to change the rules.
You’re allowed to pause.
You’re allowed to say no, even to things that once felt like “shoulds.”

Because you are not a waiting room for your own life.

What Saying “No” Can Look Like

Saying no doesn’t have to mean giving things up.
Sometimes, it simply means making space,
for what feels more aligned, more energising, more true.

It might look like:

• Saying no to overcommitting, even when you could say yes

• Saying no to self-judgment when things feel hard

• Saying no to the idea that your worth comes from productivity
  

It can also look like modelling boundaries to our children,
helping them see that self-respect and self-expression matter just as much as achievement.

Sometimes, one small “no” becomes the doorway to a deeper yes.

Here’s what I’ve learned through teaching oral fluency:
You don’t need to be perfect. You need to be clear.

The same is true for your life.

You don’t need all the answers.
You need to be clear about what matters,
and courageous enough to protect it.

I Just Spoke at Virgin Media O2 - And Here’s What Stayed With Me

Last Tuesday, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote at Virgin Media O2, for their Enrich Network during Islamophobia Awareness Month.

The session was titled “Navigating Identity, Inclusion & Career Ownership”, and while the theme centred on this important month, the conversation reached far beyond faith.

Let’s dive into what made this event so powerful, and how it sparked a conversation we all need to keep having.

What’s in store:

• The one-word theme that defined the keynote: Permission

• Why your non-linear path is an advantage, not a setback

• The most common (and silent) blockers underrepresented professionals face

• How visibility transforms your career — and others’

• Why you are the CEO of your career, not your manager

• Inclusion beyond awareness months: how to build safer, more supportive workplaces.

  

The session became a space to talk honestly about what it means to build a career when you’re:

• part of the Global Majority,

• from an underrepresented background,

• the “only one” in the room,

• or simply someone who’s been underestimated, overlooked, or misunderstood in professional spaces.

Today, I want to share a few reflections, not just about the event, but about the bigger message behind it.

The message at the heart of this keynote

If I could summarise the session in one word, it would be:

Permission.

✨ Permission to define success on your own terms
✨ Permission to take up space
✨ Permission to own your voice and your story
✨ Permission to lead, even when your path is non-linear

Too often, people from underrepresented backgrounds are taught (directly or indirectly) to stay grateful, stay quiet, or stay in line.
This keynote was an invitation to break that pattern.

My story, and the truth behind non-linear paths

I shared a part of my own journey, not because it’s extraordinary, but because it’s common, yet rarely spoken about.

I didn’t arrive in the UK with perfect English or a ready-made career.
I restarted from scratch - teaching assistant, unqualified teacher, retraining, juggling motherhood, navigating systems where I didn’t always “fit the mould.”

But that’s exactly why I speak on these topics today.

Because success isn’t linear.
Because many of us build our careers through pivots, pauses, reinventions and resilience.
Because so many talented people underestimate their capabilities simply because they don’t see themselves represented where they aspire to be.

Your background, accent, name, age, culture…etc.
These aren’t limitations.
They’re context.
And context can become strength when you understand its value.

The blockers we all recognised

When I asked attendees to share the biggest blockers they’ve faced in their careers, the responses came quickly:

• imposter syndrome

• lack of confidence

• being underestimated

• bias

• fear of judgment

• limited visibility

• “not fitting in”

These aren’t individual issues.
They’re systemic patterns many of us quietly navigate.

And yet, naming them is powerful.
It allows us to challenge them.
It allows us to realise: We’re not alone, and we’re not imagining it.

Mindset + visibility = the turning point

This is something I’ve seen over and over again in my own journey and in the women I coach:

You can be incredible at what you do, but if you’re invisible, opportunities won’t find you.

When I started showing up on LinkedIn consistently, everything changed:

• clients began reaching out,

• collaborations formed,

• unexpected opportunities appeared,

• and even this keynote came about because I was visible on Linkedin. The organiser found me at a time when I wasn’t even expecting anything.

Visibility is not bragging.
Visibility is leadership.
Visibility is career ownership.
Visibility creates opportunity not just for you, but for others who see themselves in you.

But there’s another layer to visibility that often gets overlooked:

Historically, people from underrepresented backgrounds haven’t always been given the platform to be seen or heard.

When you don’t see people like you in certain roles or industries, you doubt if you belong there.

That’s why showing up matters.
Because when you are visible, whether in meetings, on LinkedIn, or in your industry, you’re not only advancing your own career.
You’re also helping to normalise diversity in professional spaces, and you might become an example (intentionally or not) for someone who has been waiting to see a path that looks like theirs.

This is the true power of visibility.

Career ownership: your future needs your voice

One message that resonated strongly with the audience was this:

You are the CEO of your career.

Not your manager.
Not your organisation.
Not the people who overlook you.
Not the ones who underestimate you.

You.

Owning your progression means:

• putting yourself forward for opportunities even when you don’t tick every box,

• making your ambitions known,

• showcasing your wins,

• seeking mentors and allies,

• and taking strategic steps that support your growth.

People cannot champion what they cannot see.

Inclusion is everyone’s business

While the event was hosted during Islamophobia Awareness Month, the conversation widened into something bigger:

How do we create workplaces where people feel safe, seen, and supported, regardless of their background?

We spoke about:

• inclusive team events,

• flexible cultural and personal celebrations,

• psychological safety,

• creating space for difference rather than expecting sameness,

• and the importance of allyship - across all identities.

Inclusion is not a policy; it’s a culture.
And culture shifts when individuals decide they want something better.

A small challenge for you this week

After the keynote, I asked attendees to take one step toward owning their presence.

Final thought

One of my favourite quotes says:

“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”

That’s the impact of visibility.
That’s the impact of representation.
That’s the impact of owning your story, even when it feels uncomfortable at first.

Stop Playing Small: The Habits That Are Silently Costing You Opportunities

Fun Fact:

There’s a French phrase I teach my students that perfectly describes what I want to talk about today: “se faire tout petit”.

It means “to make oneself very small.” It’s often used when someone tries to shrink themselves to avoid being seen, judged, or criticized.

It’s poetic. But it’s also painful.

Because far too many of us are doing exactly that in our lives and careers, and calling it humility.

The Lies We’ve Been Fed

Let’s talk about the lies that keep brilliant people playing small:

They told you:

• Be humble but really meant “don’t be too confident.”

• “Don’t stand out” but really meant “don’t challenge the status quo.”

• Stay grounded but really meant “stay beneath us.”

Sound familiar?

Here’s what I’ve learned from working with ambitious women leaders and watching high school students transform their relationship with French:

The same pattern shows up everywhere.

The bright student who won’t speak up in French class for fear of making a mistake? That’s the same self-silencing many of us practice in meetings.

The founder who second-guesses her pricing? She’s using the same diminishing language your son or daughter might use when saying “I’ll never be good at languages”

Many of us are shrinking in one area or another.
And it’s costing you opportunities, money, and joy.

What They Really Fear (And Why It’s Not Your Job to Make Them Comfortable)

1/ Your Authentic Presence

Not the version that makes them comfortable.
Not the persona that fits their expectations.
The raw, unfiltered, divinely purposed YOU.

In French, we call this “être à l’aise dans sa peau” – to be comfortable in your own skin. It’s what transforms a hesitant student into someone who speaks confidently in their oral exam.

It’s what transforms a cautious founder into a magnetic leader.

When my students finally stop letting fear of mistakes silence them and start applying proper French pronunciation consistently, that’s when the A grades happen.

When leaders stop trying to fit someone else’s template and start leading in their own way, that’s when the real impact begins.

2/ Your Refusal to Play Their Games

• You stop explaining yourself to deaf ears

• You stop dimming your light for dim rooms

• You stop shrinking to fit into ‘small’ spaces

Think about this:
When a high school student finally stops making excuses for why they “can’t” do French and starts showing up fully, that’s when breakthrough happens.
The same principle applies in leadership and business growth.

3/ Your Quiet Confidence

• You know your worth without needing their validation

• You walk your path without seeking their permission

• You shine without apologizing for the brightness

This is “l’assurance” – quiet confidence.
Not arrogance. Not ego.
Just the unshakeable knowing that you belong exactly where you are, speaking exactly as you speak, leading exactly as you lead.

Action Plan: How to Protect Your Light

Stop asking people who don’t recognize your value to validate you.

Start surrounding yourself with those who celebrate your growth.

Remember: Your light doesn’t need approval. It needs expression.

Whether you’re building a business, scaling your leadership, or supporting your son or daughter through their French exams, the principle is the same.

Success doesn’t come from shrinking.
It comes from strategic expansion into who you’re meant to be.

Signs You’re Done Shrinking

✓ You say “no” without elaborate explanations
✓ You pursue dreams others call unrealistic
✓ You prioritize inner peace over external applause

Just like the student who finally raises their hand in French class despite imperfect pronunciation, you’re ready to raise your voice in spaces that matter. .. with your full accent, your full story, your full brilliance.

So Let Me Ask You This:

What will you stop shrinking to accommodate this month?

Will you finally post that thought leadership piece you’ve been sitting on?

Will you raise your rates to match your value?

Will you apply for that opportunity you think is “too big” for you?

Will you support your son or daughter in pursuing their language dreams, even when others say it’s “too hard”?

Whatever it is, know this: The world needs your full brilliance and full impact.

Your Soul Wasn’t Designed to Fit In

In my 14+ years working with ambitious families, I’ve seen the same transformation happen again and again: When we stop trying to fit the mold and start expressing our authentic capability, whether in French or in leadership, everything changes.

The student who was “not a language person” earns an A* and goes to Dartmouth.

The founder who was playing small starts attracting premium clients and meaningful opportunities.

The leader who was dimming her light becomes the one others follow.

The Leadership Mirror Principle

Something shifted for me recently in how I see difficult relationships.

It wasn’t a breakthrough from a book or a coaching session.

It was a simple realization:

Everyone in your life - colleagues, clients, partners, and yes, even your children (if you have any) - is reflecting something back to you.

Some reflections are beautiful.
Others are uncomfortable.

But all of them are trying to show you something important.

Here’s the truth most of us avoid:

Every person in your life is a mirror.

Some reflect your strengths and potential.
Others expose the wounds you haven’t yet healed.

And most of us run from both.

We avoid the painful reflections because they’re uncomfortable.
We deny the beautiful ones with imposter syndrome.
We blame the mirror instead of reading the message it’s showing us.

But what if you could decode these reflections, and use them to accelerate your growth as a leader, founder, and parent?

Let’s break this down.

3 Mirrors in Your Life (And What They’re Really Showing You)

1. The Trigger Mirror

You know the moment:
A client critiques your proposal.
A colleague talks over you in a meeting.
Your daughter rolls her eyes at the dinner table, and you snap.

When someone triggers you, pause.

Ask yourself: What unhealed part of me is this exposing?

👉 Is it perfectionism?
👉 Control issues?
👉 A childhood fear of “getting it wrong”?

Their behavior is the messenger, not the message.
Your reaction reveals exactly where you still have room to grow.

I see this play out constantly with the high-achieving families I work with.

A parent becomes frustrated when their son or daughter “isn’t trying hard enough” in French class.

But often? That frustration is really about their own perfectionism, their fear of their child falling behind, or unresolved feelings about their own academic journey.

The student isn’t the problem. They’re the mirror.

2. The Energy Drain Mirror

Ever feel completely wiped after talking to someone?

Chances are, they’re showing you something important:
Your boundaries need reinforcement.

Here’s what I’ve learned after 14+ years of working with ambitious women:
Energy vampires only exist when we allow them access.

They’re showing you where your boundaries are weak.

Perhaps you’re saying yes when you mean no.
Perhaps you’re over-delivering because you don’t yet trust your value.
Perhaps you’re trying to prove yourself instead of simply being yourself.

Whether it’s a client who emails at midnight, a colleague who dominates every meeting, or anyone who leaves you depleted, they’re not the issue.
The weak boundary is.

The Mirror Says:
“You’re leaking energy where you should be protecting it.”

Your light is precious. Guard it.
Not everyone deserves access to it.

3. The Inspiration Mirror

When someone deeply inspires you, pay attention, be it a leader you follow, a business owner crushing it in your industry, or a coach who seems to have it all figured out.

When you see another woman founder who’s built the visibility you crave, the business model you dream of, the confidence you wish you had, your admiration isn’t random.

Your admiration is direction.

What you admire in them exists in you too.
Their light isn’t a reminder of what you lack.
It’s permission to shine yours.

The Mirror Says:
“You already have this inside you.”

Think about it:

You wouldn’t recognize their brilliance if you didn’t already possess it somewhere inside yourself.

The Academic Parallel: When Students Mirror Their Environment

This mirror principle applies directly to how young people approach learning.

When I meet a high school student who says “I’m not a language person” or “I’ll never be good at French,” I hear something else.

They’re mirroring back limiting beliefs they’ve absorbed:

• from a teacher who didn’t believe in them,

• from classmates who made them feel silly for trying,

• from their own inner critic.

They’re not lacking ability.
They’re reflecting an environment that hasn’t shown them their potential.

The transformation happens when we shift what we’re reflecting back to them:

• Instead of doubt, we mirror belief through small, consistent wins

• Instead of judgment, we mirror safety where they can practice speaking without fear

• Instead of limitations, we mirror possibility by showing them the sophisticated expression they’re capable of

When students achieve top grades and go on to competitive universities, the academics are just the visible result.

The real transformation?

It’s watching them stop saying “I can’t” and start believing “I can.”

Just like you’re learning to do in your leadership.

Action Plan: How to Use the Mirror Principle

✅ Stop trying to fix people who aren’t asking for help. (Yes, including your son or daughter when they’re not ready. Sometimes the best thing you can do is model growth yourself.)

✅ Track your triggers.
Patterns reveal progress.
Keep a “mirror journal” for a week:
Who triggered you? What were you really feeling?

✅ Raise your energetic standards.
Start saying no to draining relationships.
Set new boundaries without explanation or apology.

✅ Follow your inspiration.
If someone’s success lights you up (or makes you a little envious),
ask: “What part of me is ready to rise?”

The One Skill That Accelerates Both Leadership and Learning

There’s a skill that quietly influences how quickly we grow as leaders.
It’s the same skill that helps some students reach A* grades while others plateau at B.

And after 14+ years working with ambitious high schoolers and women leaders, I’ve noticed something surprising:

It’s not intelligence.
It’s not confidence.
It’s not even hard work.

The One Skill That Accelerates Everything is:
🧠 Teachability.

Not talent. Not charisma. Not working 16-hour days. But the courage to be coachable.

Whether you’re building a personal brand, managing a team, or mentoring your high- schooler through exam stress, this skill is your edge.

What I’ve Learned From 100+ Student Success Stories

After supporting students preparing for (I)GCSE, A-Level, and IB French exams, a clear pattern emerged:

The learners who earn A–A* grades aren’t always the naturally gifted ones.
They’re the ones who are open, willing to learn, to ask, to try again.

The student who says,
“I’m still confused about the subjunctive”
often progresses more than the one who quietly tries to keep up without asking.

Not because one is smarter, but because clarity opens the door to progress.

We can’t improve something we don’t acknowledge.
And that truth applies just as much in our careers as it does in a French classroom.

What Teachable People Do Differently

Let’s break down five habits of teachable people that you (and your high schooler) can borrow right now:

1. They Ask Questions. Even the “Obvious” Ones

They’re not afraid to pause and say, “Can we go over that again?”
They know that clarity is more valuable than pretending to understand.

In business, that might sound like:
👉 “Can you walk me through that example once more?”

In French class:
👉 “Why do we use ‘être’ here instead of ‘avoir’?”

What might feel like a “silly” question is often the exact moment real learning clicks into place.

2. They Welcome Feedback, Not Just Praise

Teachable people don’t take feedback as a personal attack.
They take it as an opportunity.

When I review a student’s essay and point out a grammar gap, the ones who grow the fastest usually say:
👉 “Thanks! Can you show me how to improve it?”

It’s the same with the founders I work with on LinkedIn strategy.
When we adjust their messaging, they lean in; with curiosity, not resistance.

3. They Seek Out Smart, Challenging Rooms

They don’t need to be the most experienced voice in the room.
They choose to be around people who help them grow.

When I was working in schools, my students who studied with peers slightly ahead of them tended to accelerate faster, because they’re being stretched, not just supported.

In leadership, it’s the same: growth comes from conversations that expand your thinking.

4. They Update Their Beliefs

“I’m not a language person.”
“I’m too old for social media.”
“I don’t get tech.”

Teachable people replace outdated stories with upgraded thinking.
They don’t hold onto old stories about what they’re “good at” or “not good at.”

I’ve seen students go from “I’m just not a language person” to thriving at top universities like Dartmouth.

What shifted?
Not their ability, but their belief about what was possible.

As a founder or leader, that same shift is available to you.
Strategies that got you here may not get you where you’re going.
And that’s not failure. It’s evolution.

5. They Stay Curious, No Matter Their Experience

You can have 20 years of experience, or 1 year, repeated 20 times.

Teachable people stay curious. They ask what’s new.
They question what they already know.

My strongest French students don’t settle at “good enough.”
They stay curious, seeking nuance, precision, and mastery.

The Moment Growth Begins

Whether you’re a founder clarifying your personal brand or your high school son or daughter is trying to master the subjunctive …

Real progress begins not when you have all the answers, but when you say:

“I don’t know this yet, but I’m ready to learn.”

Because being teachable is the foundation of real confidence.

That vulnerability - that willingness to be taught..

is what transforms struggling students into A* achievers.

It’s what turns invisible founders into recognized thought leaders.

It’s what helps experienced professionals continue to evolve instead of plateau.

Action Plan: Cultivating Radical Teachability

1. Ask a “dumb” question this week, even if you fear it makes you look inexperienced.

2. Invite feedback, and don’t defend it. Just listen.

3. Read or watch something that challenges your worldview.
   Bonus: Reflect on what it shifted for you.

4. Catch a limiting belief in action and reframe it:

“I’m not good at this… yet.”

5. Find a stretch circle.
   Join a group where you feel slightly out of your depth. That’s where growth lives.

What No One Tells You About Why We Really Quit

I’ve heard it hundreds of times over the past 14 years, in my work with high school teens and women leaders.

The words are different, but the weight is the same:

“I hate this.”

And here’s what I’ve learned after sitting with that statement in classrooms, coaching sessions, and quiet conversations:

People don’t hate the thing.
They hate how it makes them feel.

The Hidden Language of Powerlessness

When your high school teen says, “I hate French,” they’re rarely talking about the language itself.

What they’re really saying is:

• “I hate feeling lost while everyone else nods along.”

• “I hate raising my hand and hearing myself stumble.”

• “I hate studying for hours and still failing the test.”

• “I hate how my accent sounds compared to the fluent kids.”

• “I hate working this hard and feeling this stuck.”

When a founder says, “I hate LinkedIn,” they’re often saying:

• “I hate posting and hearing crickets.”

• “I hate watching others grow while I stay invisible.”

• “I hate not knowing if my message matters.”

• “I hate feeling like an imposter in my own expertise.”

• “I hate how much effort I’m putting in with so little return.”

The pattern is universal.

What sounds like hatred is actually helplessness wearing a sharper mask.

Because when you work hard and still feel behind,
when you show up and don’t see results,
when you try and it doesn’t land,
it’s easier to say “I hate it” than to say:

“I’m struggling, and I don’t know how to fix it.”

The Moment Everything Shifts

I’ve witnessed this transformation more than a hundred times now.

There’s a precise moment when the “hate” dissolves.

For the student, it happens when:

• The irregular verb pattern that felt impossible suddenly clicks

• The sentence structure that seemed random starts to make sense

• The oral exam that filled them with dread becomes something they can actually prepare for

For the founder, it happens when:

• Her content finally starts to resonate and she sees genuine engagement

• She finds her voice and audience.

• She identifies exactly who she’s speaking to, and why they need to hear from her

In both cases, the shift isn’t about innate talent appearing out of nowhere.

It’s about reclaiming agency.

It’s the moment they stop feeling done to by the process
and start feeling in control of it.

What This Means for You

You’re already leading at home, at work, and in your business.

You know when “fine” doesn’t mean fine.
When hesitation signals something deeper than the surface objection.

And “I hate it” might not mean what it sounds like.

So next time you hear it from your child, partner, or even yourself…

Pause.
Ask:
What am I really feeling?
Where do I feel powerless right now?

Because most of the time, resistance isn’t about the task.
It’s about how the task makes us feel about ourselves.

And the real growth begins when we reclaim agency.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what separates people
who thrive under pressure from those who crumble.

Resilience has become a buzzword.
But when you strip it down, what does it really look like in action?

Not just in theory, but in practice. In real moments.
In the decisions that shape careers, confidence, and futures.

Here’s what I’ve learned coaching both women leaders growing their presence online and teens preparing for high-stakes French exams such as their GCSEs and A-Levels:

Mental strength isn’t something you’re born with.
It’s something you build, one brave decision at a time.

I’ve seen this pattern again and again: founders on the verge of giving up LinkedIn after weeks of low engagement, and students frustrated by their own slow progress, thinking they just “don’t have the gene” for learning.

Different people. Different paths.
But the same hidden belief:
that mental strength is something you either have or you don’t.

Here’s the truth:
👉 Mental strength is a daily practice, not a personality trait.
And it’s built through small, deliberate choices that compound over time.

Let me share what I’ve observed in the people who break through, whether they’re stepping into visibility as leaders or conquering a language they once feared.

The 6 Daily Practices That Build Resilience

1. They Keep Moving Forward

They don’t dwell. They extract the lesson, adjust, and keep going.

• The Founder: I’ve worked with founders who went from posting sporadically to building genuine traction. They didn’t have the perfect strategy, but they kept showing up. They stopped replaying old narratives about not being “expert enough” and focused on serving their audience.
  

• The Student: I’ve worked with many students who’ve faced that discouraging turning point, where French suddenly felt too hard, too foreign, too overwhelming. Instead of shutting down, they get curious.
  And even when it’s uncomfortable, they commit to practice. Over time, that decision to lean in, not away, pays off. Not just in grades in their exam, but in confidence.

Pattern: Mentally resilient people don’t waste energy feeling sorry for themselves. They extract the lesson and take action.

2. They Welcome What Scares Them

Growth lives on the other side of discomfort. Mentally strong people don’t resist change. They position themselves to benefit from it.

From the classroom: The students who improve fastest aren’t the ones who avoid challenges. They’re the ones who actively seek them out. They volunteer to speak first. They ask for harder exercises. They push into what they don’t know.

The insight: Comfort zones feel safe, but they’re where growth goes to die.

3. They Master Their Inner Dialogue

The way you speak to yourself matters more than you think.

• “That post flopped. I’m not cut out for this.” vs.

• “That post flopped. what can I tweak next time?”

One is spiraling. The other is strength.

Power move: You can’t always control what happens.
But you can always control the story you tell yourself about it.
Talk to yourself like someone you’re responsible for encouraging.

4. They Take Calculated Risks

They get ready by doing.
Waiting doesn’t create readiness. Intentional action does.

• From the business side: The bravest thing I see leaders do is niche down (even when it feels scary). It feels counterintuitive, like limiting yourself. But the ones who commit to clarity are the ones who often stand out the fastest.

The lesson: Strategic risk, backed by clarity and intention is how breakthroughs happen.

5. They Never Stop Learning

Mentally strong people are relentlessly curious.

• A founder who spends 10 minutes daily refining her message compounds clarity.

• A student who speaks 10 minutes a day gains fluency, not through one heroic effort, but through consistent repetition.

Success isn’t an event. It’s a habit.

6. They Invest in Themselves

Mentally strong people believe they are worth the investment.
Not someday. Not when they’re “ready.” Now.

Whether it’s booking a LinkedIn audit or a speaking coach, mentally strong people treat growth like a responsibility, not a luxury. They take ownership of their trajectory. And that decision changes everything.

The truth: Betting on yourself isn’t selfish. It’s strategic.

Mental strength isn’t reserved for the naturally confident or inherently talented.

It’s built through choices:

• The choice to move forward instead of staying stuck

• The choice to embrace discomfort instead of avoiding it

• The choice to reframe setbacks as opportunities

• The choice to take strategic risks with courage

• The choice to keep learning, even when it’s hard

• The choice to invest in your own potential

The Moment Belief Breaks

What no one tells you about confidence

I’ve noticed something that shows up consistently across my work.

As a founder, mum of 2, and someone who’s worked with ambitious women leaders, whether guiding their teens to places at leading universities or helping them build visibility for their businesses, I see the same moment happen again and again.

It’s the moment when someone capable stops believing they are.

Not because they lack talent.
Not because they aren’t trying hard enough.
But because somewhere along the way, a foundation cracked, and they kept building on top of it anyway.

The pattern repeats itself, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

In leadership:

A capable founder tells me, “I don’t know how to stand out in my market.”

But when we dig deeper, it’s never about capability.

It’s about an unfilled gap:

• The niche she never fully defined, so her message appeals to everyone and no one

• The pricing conversation she avoided because it felt uncomfortable, so she stayed undervalued

• The network she didn’t nurture because she was too busy “doing the work,” so opportunities passed her by

She kept trying to grow her business on shaky ground. And eventually, she stopped believing it was possible for her.

In learning:

A teenager sits across from me and says, “I’m just not a language person.”

But they are.

What happened is this:

Somewhere in Year 8, they didn’t fully understand a grammar concept.
Or they stumbled over pronunciation in front of their classmates and decided it was safer to stay silent.
Or they had a teacher who moved too fast, and they never caught up.

Instead of pausing to fill that gap, they kept moving forward, building on unstable ground.

Until the gap became so wide, they couldn’t see across it anymore.

What Looks Like Failure Is Often Just an Unfilled Gap

Whether I’m working with a student preparing for A-Level French or a founder building her personal brand, the pattern is identical:

When someone tells you they “just can’t,” there’s usually a forgotten fracture, a moment buried in their story, a small crack that went unaddressed and quietly grew into something bigger.

For the leader:

• The strategic partnership she didn’t pursue because she wasn’t sure she was “ready” became the reason she’s still struggling to scale

• The expertise she didn’t own publicly became the reason potential clients can’t find her

• The boundary she didn’t set with a difficult client became the pattern of overworking and undercharging. This actually happened to me with a client, so I learnt this lesson the hard way.

For the teenager:

• The grammar point they didn’t understand in Year 8 became the reason they can’t build complex sentences in Year 10

• The pronunciation they were too afraid to practice became the reason they freeze in oral exams

• The motivation they lost after uninspiring lessons became the reason they stopped trying altogether

In both cases, the gap compounds.

And what started as a small uncertainty becomes a deeply held belief:
“This just isn’t for me.”

The Good News: Gaps Don’t Define You

Whether you’re building your leadership presence or watching your teenager navigate their academic journey, the principle is the same:

Confidence isn’t about pretending everything’s perfect.
It’s about recognizing where the foundation needs attention.

The founder who finally claims her niche and pricing?
She starts attracting aligned clients because the foundation is solid now.

The student who revisits that Year 8 grammar concept?
They start constructing sophisticated sentences because the crack has been filled.

It’s never about innate ability.

It’s about awareness - seeing where the foundation cracked in the first place.

Reflection Prompt: Where’s Your Foundation?

Sometimes just noticing where things shifted is enough to change how we move forward.

Here’s what to consider:

1. Get curious about the turning point
Where did confidence start to waver? In your positioning as a leader? In how you price your services? In your teenager’s belief that they could succeed in languages? There’s often wisdom in identifying that moment.

2. Listen to the “I’m just not...” statements
When you (or your child) says, “I’m just not good at this,” it’s worth questioning. Is it truth, or is it a signal that something wasn’t solidified when it needed to be?

3. Notice what you’ve been building on
Sometimes we realize we’ve been adding more and more on top of something that was never quite stable. That awareness alone can shift things.

4. Give it time and space
Rebuilding doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes acknowledging the gap is enough to start shifting how you approach it.

This Week’s Story: A Lesson From a Test (And a Cocoon)

Some time ago, a woman leader reached out to me.

Her daughter had just failed a French test at her high-achieving school. Another major exam was coming up in a few weeks, and panic was setting in.

This mom is a leader and manages crises daily. But watching her daughter struggle with something she couldn’t fix?

That hit differently.

“She’s smart,” she said. “She’s working hard. But nothing’s clicking. I don’t know how to help her.”

After 14 years of working with ambitious families, I’ve seen this story play out again and again:

👉 The ones who turn things around fast aren’t the most talented.
They’re the ones who learn what to do when hard work stops producing results.

And here’s the truth:
That pattern shows up everywhere.
In students facing make-or-break exams.
In leaders navigating pivots.
In founders building something from nothing.
In anyone trying to change when the stakes feel high.

That uncomfortable phase, where it feels like you’re going backwards, not forwards is not failure. That’s transformation.

Here’s how I help high achievers turn things around, and what to do when you’re stuck in the messy middle. These three mindset shifts make real transformation possible.

When Change Feels Like It’s Not Working… Try This:

1. Reframe what “success” looks like right now

Most people quit because they’re measuring the wrong thing.

• The student thinks success means acing every practice test.
  🟡 Actually, right now it means identifying exactly where the gaps are so you can fill them strategically.
  

• The leader thinks success means having all the answers.
  🟡 Actually, it means asking better questions and admitting what you don’t know yet.
  

• The founder thinks success means instant traction.
  🟡 Actually, it means showing up consistently when nobody’s watching… yet.
  

You’re not failling. You’re in the part of the process where the real work happens, where you’re building the foundation that everything else will stand on. It isn’t wasted time.

What to do:
Stop asking “Why isn’t this working yet?”
Start asking “What is this teaching me right now?”

2. Separate discomfort from danger

Your brain doesn’t always know the difference.

Both “this is scary” and “this is unsafe” can light up the same fear circuits.

They both trigger the same alarm.
But one is a warning. The other is just growth.

• The student who’s anxious about the upcoming exam isn’t in danger. She’s uncomfortable because the stakes matter to her.

• The leader who’s nervous about a difficult conversation isn’t in danger. She’s stepping outside her comfort zone.

• The founder who feels exposed posting her ideas publicly isn’t in danger. She’s becoming visible.

When you try to eliminate all discomfort, you eliminate all growth.

The goal isn’t to feel comfortable. It’s to feel uncomfortable and keep moving anyway.

What to do:
When you feel resistance, ask yourself:
“Is this actually dangerous, or does it just feel unfamiliar?”
If it’s unfamiliar, that’s your signal to lean in, not pull back.

Trade control for curiosity.
Ask: “What happens if I stay in this long enough to see what’s on the other side?”

3. Shrink the gap between attempts

Here’s what actually builds momentum:
repetition in short intervals, not perfection in long ones.

Working with students for decades, I’ve seen that the ones who turn things around don’t wait until they feel confident to try again. They practice badly, get feedback, adjust, and practice again the next day.

Only action builds confidence.

You can’t think your way into feeling ready. You act your way into it.

• The leader who has difficult conversations regularly gets better at them.
  The one who avoids them for months stays stuck in the same patterns.

• The founder who posts three times a week even when it feels clunky?
  She’ll sound completely different in six weeks.

• The one who posts once a month when inspiration strikes?
  She’ll stay uncomfortable forever.

What to do:
Whatever you’re trying to transform, make the cycles shorter.

Say yes before you feel ready. Show up before you have it all figured out.

Act your way into the next version of yourself instead of waiting for permission to begin.

Start small. But start.

What to Do When You’re in the Messy Middle

Here’s how to move through discomfort instead of getting stuck in it:

1. Redefine Progress → Track lessons, not just wins.

2. Label the Fear → Ask: “Is this unsafe or just unfamiliar?”

3. Shorten the Feedback Loop → Take action, reflect, repeat.

Small steps compound into big transformations.

The Moment That Sparked This

A few months ago, I was in a coaching session with a team member.

I asked if she knew how to handle a specific task. She said yes.

But as she began, it became clear she wasn’t sure how.

I paused, walked her through it step-by-step, and she quickly picked it up.
No harm done, but the moment stayed with me.

How often do we do this?
We say “yes, we know” when we really mean “not yet.”
We keep quiet instead of asking for help.
Avoid saying “I don’t know” out of fear it’ll make us look unqualified?

But here’s what I’ve learned:
👉 Admitting you don’t know doesn’t make you less of a leader.
👉 Pretending you do wastes everyone’s time, including your own.

No one knows everything; not your team, not your clients, and not you.

What matters is how we communicate when we don’t know yet.

Here are 24 simple ways to say “I don’t know,” without eroding trust, shrinking your presence, or overcomplicating the moment.

24 Better Ways to Say “I Don’t Know”

We’ve all been there.
A client asks something unexpected.
A team member needs direction.
A student asks a question you haven’t prepared for.

Here are 24 ways to handle those moments with grace, credibility and calm clarity.

(Instead of saying... say this👇)

   ✅ “Let me find out and get back to you.”
   Why it works: You value accuracy over guessing.

2. ❌ “I’m not sure.”
   ✅ “Here’s what I know so far, and I’ll gather more details.”
   Why it works: You’re building from clarity, not hiding from it.

3. ❌ “Your guess is as good as mine.”
   ✅ “Let’s explore this together.”
   Why it works: Invites collaboration.

🥛 The Milk, The Farm, and The Moment You're In

I keep coming back to that story of the spilled milk I heard a while ago.
And every time I think of it, it hits differently, especially when I reflect on how I started my business 14 years ago.

The Dream That Spilled

A young porter at a train station makes 50p a trip.

One day, a well-dressed man offers him £10 to carry a can of milk to his house, just a mile away.

That’s a fortune to the porter.
He accepts. He’s confident. He balances the can of milk on his head and begins walking.

But then, he starts dreaming.

“With that £10, I’ll buy two chickens.
They’ll lay eggs. I’ll sell them, buy more chickens.
Soon I’ll have a farm.
I’ll hire ten people to help run the place.
I’ll expand. I’ll sell the chickens, sell the eggs.
I’ll open an abattoir.
I’ll supply meat to all the butchers in the area.
Then I’ll buy land.
After that, I’ll get sheep.
Cows.
Crops.
Move to the city.
Buy buildings.
Become the biggest businessman around.

Even the mayor will want me to marry his daughter.
The same one who once turned me down.
And when he asks,
I’ll say... No.”

He smiles, proud of his future self.
Then, he shakes his head in triumph.

And the milk spills.

All of it. Gone.

The man turns back and yells, “Didn’t I pay you £10 not to drop it?!”

The young porter responds:

“Sir, please.
You just lost a can of milk.
But I?
I lost my chickens.
My eggs.
My sheep.
My cows.
My farms.
My buildings.
600 people just lost their jobs.
And at the same time, I lost my marriage.
And my whole life.
So please, just be quiet.”

It’s funny, but here’s the truth:

Most people drop the milk because they’re too busy dreaming about the farm.

They leave the present moment to plan the perfect future, and lose what they were actually holding.

The Lesson That Always Comes Back

This story captures something I’ve seen in so many ambitious people.

We take one small step… and in our minds, we’re already ten years ahead.

It's beautiful, but it’s also why progress gets lost.

Here’s what this story reminds me of every single time:

Keep a Creative Confidence Bank where you have a running list of wins, progress, and kind words you’ve received. Remind yourself: you are moving forward.

2️. Fear of Failure Feels Heavier

When comparison is in the driver’s seat, risks feel scarier.
Because now it’s not just about trying. It’s about “looking good.”

💡 Shift It:
Reframe failure as tuition. Every stumble adds wisdom, courage, and grit to your story.

3️. Copycat Thinking Creeps in

You start mirroring other people’s moves,
Not because they’re right, but because they’re visible.

💡 Shift It:
Seek inspiration outside your usual bubble; art, nature, history, music.
Fresh inputs = original outputs.

4️. You Edit Before You Explore

“Too simple.” “Too weird.” “Not polished enough.”
Ideas get shut down before they get a chance to breathe.

   Set a boundary: No social until you’ve spent 30 mins creating something of your own.
   

3. Launch the Idea You’ve Been Sitting On.
   Even if it’s imperfect. Especially if it’s imperfect.
   

4. Ask yourself this:

“What would I create if no one was watching?”

I wanted to start today’s newsletter with something personal.

A few months ago, I decided to start going back to the gym. I committed to lifting weights three times a week and walking 6–7 days a week. It felt small at first, but honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in years.

Why?
Because it wasn’t just about fitness.

It was about creating intentional space for my energy, my clarity, and my leadership.

That one habit reminded me:
we don’t always need more time.

We need better focus.
We need smarter systems.

As leaders, we wear our busy-ness like a badge of honor.
But the truth is working harder isn't always working smarter.

And that’s what today’s issue is all about.

These aren't the dramatic signs of burnout. They’re the everyday patterns that creep in when you’re running on autopilot, and slowly draining your capacity to lead, think, and grow.

Let’s name them so we can change them.

1. You say “Busy” when someone asks how you are

Sign: “Busy” is your default answer, even when you’re not sure what you’re actually getting done.
Fix: Swap “busy” for honest reflection.
Try: “I’ve been juggling a lot lately, but I’m working on creating more space.”

Say something different next time someone asks. You might surprise yourself.

2. You eat lunch at your desk with crumbs in your keyboard

Sign: Lunch isn’t a break. It’s a 10-minute multitasking sprint between Slack pings.
Fix: Treat lunch like a meeting with yourself. Even 15 unplugged minutes can reset your brain.

Have one fully screen-free lunch this week.
Protect that time like you would a client call.

3. You check email while walking to the bathroom

Sign: You can’t not check something, even during a 60-second break.
Fix: Build no-phone zones. Your brain needs whitespace to think clearly and creatively.

Try “no tech” breaks: bathroom, meals, and the first 10 minutes before bed.

4. You haven’t taken a real vacation in years, and you say it like it’s impressive

Sign: You feel like the business will fall apart if you unplug.
Fix: Time off isn’t optional. It’s leadership maintenance. If your system breaks without you, it needs better systems.

👉 Quick win:
Block 1 personal day in the next 30 days. Non-negotiable. No email. No catch-up.

5. You have 47 browser tabs open, and you “need them all”

Sign: You’re mentally scattered, constantly context-switching, and struggling to focus.
Fix: Use tab managers like Toby or OneTab to reduce digital clutter.

👉 Quick win: Close anything you haven’t looked at in 48 hours.
If it’s important, you’ll find it again.

6. You say “I don’t have time” while reorganizing your inbox

Sign: You’re stuck in reactive mode, doing what’s easy instead of what’s essential.
Fix: Lead with strategy. Schedule your most important (and energy-heavy) work first.

👉 Quick win:
Block the first hour of tomorrow for deep, needle-moving work, before you check your inbox.

7. You feel guilty when you're not working

Sign: Even your downtime feels like procrastination.
Fix: Reframe rest as an essential business activity. Because it is.

👉 Quick win:
Journal or voice-note this: What would it look like to lead from a place of rest, not depletion?

Action Plan:
Create Space for What Really Matters

You don’t need more hours in the day.
You need space to think.
You need systems that support you.
You need permission to stop over-functioning and start leading.

The Parable That Stopped Me:

The Fisherman & The Banker

A wealthy banker was vacationing in a quiet fishing village when he saw a local man pull in just a few perfect fish.

“Why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” he asked.

The fisherman smiled. “This is enough. I fish in the morning, then I spend time with my kids, nap with my wife, and drink wine with friends.”

The banker, amused, launches into a 20-year plan. “But if you worked more, you could scale. Buy a bigger boat. Build a fleet. Make millions. Retire early.”

“And then?” the fisherman asks.

“Then you can finally relax. Fish a little. Play with your kids. Nap with your wife. Drink wine with your friends.”

The fisherman grins, “Isn’t that what I’m already doing?”

The Real Lesson:
Leading Yourself Before You Lead Others

On the surface, this is a story about simplicity.
But if you look closer, it’s really about clarity.

While the banker saw success as scaling,
the fisherman saw success as alignment.

This is about deciding what “enough” means for you,
and then lead your actions accordingly.

Here are 4 lessons I take from this that apply to how we lead, work, and grow:

1️. Define Success Before You Chase It

The banker assumed the fisherman wanted more money, more boats, more prestige. But the fisherman already had what he valued most: time, love, presence.

Here’s the truth:
most of us chase goals we never actually chose. A bigger team, a higher title, or a larger paycheck feels like progress, until we realize it’s pulling us away from what we value most.

How often do we pursue goals we never consciously chose?

🔎 Reflection:
Have you clearly defined what “enough” means for you?

2️. Ambition Without Awareness Is a Treadmill

The banker’s plan was ambitious, but it lacked perspective.
What if those 20 years of growth actually stole the very life he hoped to enjoy at the end?

If you spend 20 years chasing success, only to circle back to the life you could have lived all along… was it worth it?

📌 Ask yourself:
Is your growth serving your life, or is your life serving your growth?
Is your ambition fueling your life, or stealing it?

3️. ROI Isn’t Just Financial

In the banker’s mind, the only metric that mattered was money.
But the fisherman measured return differently:

• Time to watch his children grow up.

• Health from rest and balance.

• Joy from music and friendship.

We don’t often put those in a spreadsheet, but they’re often the reason we start chasing money in the first place.

📊 Self-check:
Are you measuring ROI in dollars only, or also in energy, freedom, and fulfillment?

4️. Opportunity Cost Cuts Both Ways

The banker believed the fisherman was missing out by not scaling.

But here’s the part we rarely talk about:

Scaling might get him the yacht, but what if it costs him his health, his marriage, or his presence with his kids?

• He might get that fleet, but lose his marriage in the process.

• He might build wealth, but miss his children’s childhood.

• He might retire rich, but find himself lonely with no friends left to share that wine.

Opportunity cost isn’t just about what you lose by not chasing growth.
It’s also about what you might lose if you do.

And is it aligned with what truly matters?

My Key Takeaways

For me, the point of this story isn’t to say that the fisherman is right and the banker is wrong. It’s also not to condemn ambition or encourage laziness.

👉 It’s to recognize that we all have different purposes, and therefore, different definitions of success.

For the fisherman, success is living simply, being present with family and friends.
For the banker, success is building, expanding, and achieving.

Neither is better. Neither is wrong. But neither should be imposed on the other.

👉 I believe they each made choices based on what they value.

That’s the point.

Self-leadership is deciding what matters to you, and building around that.

Your version of success doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

But it does need to be lived intentionally.
